What a fantastic day weatherwise for our first game of the season and to have it at home was even more exciting. We had seven U6 players ready and raring to get on the pitch. The first half got off to a shaky start with 5 of our 7 players never having played soccer before against some pretty strong competition in Olympians. Lillian and Ivy were very strong in defense and Kade, Xavier and Grace did a lot of running and attacking. James and John also played their part with some good kicking and defending.
At half time the players shared some oranges to keep their energy up and then they were back into it again. There was a lot more defensive play again in the second half and unfortunately we couldn’t get the ball down our end to score in our first game but it’s very early days and Mick and I can’t wait to watch our mini’s improving their skills each week. Awards this week went to Kade for following directions and Ivy for her hard work in defence. All of the mini’s tried their very best and judging by the smiles on their faces had a lot of fun which is the best outcome and all we can ask as coaches. Mick and I were very impressed and proud of the effort the U6s put it and how well they conducted themselves during the game. We are looking forward to travelling to Sale next weekend for another fun game.
We would also like to thank everyone that supported the day being from setting up the grounds to working in the canteen and the support from parents on the day cheering on the kids. We would especially like to thank the GFC boys and girls that gave up their time to come down and set up and referee the matches. This allow the coaches just to focus on coaching. One final big thankyou to the committee members that also gave up their time to come down and support the mini’s by helping out, it is very much appreciated and it is great to see their presence at our home games.
